Rolls-Royce is a British brand of high-end luxury automobiles. Rolls Royce Limited was created over a lunch in 1904. Rolls-Royce Limited was formed on March 15 1906, by which time it was apparent that new premises were required for production of cars. During 1906 Royce had been developing an improved six cylinder model with more power than the Rolls Royce 30hp. Initially designated the 40/50 hp, this was the company's first all-new model The Silver Ghost, launched in 1907, was a car of legendary smoothness that completed a 14,371 mile virtually non-stop run, creating 'the best car in the world' legend. In 1931 Rolls-Royce purchased rival Bentley. The company also made engines for planes until 1973 when the divisions were split into separate companies. Not only did Rolls Royce make engines for planes, but they also manufactured military vehicles, torque converters and diesel engines. British defence company Vickers bought Rolls-Royce Motors Limited in 1980 and continued producing Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars. Renamed Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited in 1985. A Rolls-Royce powered car broke the land-speed record again in 1983. In 1998 after BMW licensed the rights to the Rolls-Royce brand name and logo from Rolls-Royce PLC and acquired the rights to the Spirit of Ecstasy and Rolls-Royce grill shape trademarks from Volkswagen AG. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited has been manufacturing Rolls-Royce branded cars since 2003.
