BMW I3

The BMW I3 is a battery powered electric vehicle with a futuristic look coming out just in time for the U.S. sales to start in May of 2014.
With a battery pack weighing 450 pounds and a curb weight totaling 2700 pounds. In 7.2 seconds from a standstill can reach a speed of 60mph a top speed reaching 93mph. The BMW I3 made its debut at the 2014 New York Auto Show taking the award for 2014 World Green Car away from the Volkswagen XL, an extremely lightweight diesel- electric hybrid and the Audi A3 Sports back G-Tron , which runs on compressed natural gas or synthetic fuel. The competition for the BMW I3 were very worthy competitors .
With an expected range on a single charge being 80 to a 100 miles it is no wonder that the BMW I3 stole the 2014 World Car Design of The Year. Its seems to be more of an unexpected win considering the Bmw I3 is not the most appealing.
Its main components consisting of carbon fiber reinforced plastic ,which, makes up the underlying body structure. Carbon fiber is known to the auto industry and race fans as a lightweight material inside formula one race cars. Until recently it was a material used sparingly due to high costs. BMW is trying to reduce unit costs by encouraging greater use of the material in cars like the BMW I3.
the manufacturer has raised its daily output from 70 to a 100 in recent weeks . The demand for the vehicle has exceeded the car-makers initial expectations. With its two- cylinder gasoline engine<which, acts as a range extender its sticker price starts at $42,275 with an addition $925 destination charge BMW has already produced 5,000 I3's since the beginning of the year and at rate will result in 20,000 by the end of the year.
