The dictionary of Merriam- Webster defines muscles cars as "any group of American-made 2-door sports coupes with powerful engines designed for high performance driving.

In 1949 the Oldsmobile Rocket 88 sparked the publics' interest in speed and power, and is often referred to as the first muscle car.The Rocket 88 featured a V8 engine, and was able to push 135 horsepower.The Rocket 88 won 8 out of 10 races in Nascars 1950 season. In 1955 the Chrysler introduced the C300 with the Hemi power and luxury car features, it had 300 horsepower.

The popularity and performance of muscle cars grew in the early 1960's. With the big manufactures battling to dominate in drag racing. In 1970 a horsepower war started , with few muscle car models advertising 450 horsepower. In 1970 Chevrolet offered the Chevelle SS 454 sold at the base price of $3,800. Also in 1970 the Dodge challenger originally cost between $2,720 and 4,055 it featured 335 horsepower.

Today in 2014 a Dodge Challenger starting price is $26,495 with horsepower ranging from 305 to 470. today you can even customize your muscle car with features you want such as: upholstry, exterior color, touch screen maps, and rims.
